In it he says this about the new CHIC album: "The album will feature ten new tracks. It's totally new material, with one or two mash-ups. As an experiment, we did a mash-up between Chic and Destiny's Child and it was great.". He goes on to say more so get over there and read it. RAYMOND JONES DOES BALLET MUSIC
(Stockholm 21/10 04) Raymond Jones is doing part of the music for the ballet MOVE. He is composing the second part (running 25 min.) and also producing the last section (Heaven) composed by Hip Hop artist Anthony Moten. The ballet is being produced by the 'Deeply Rooted' dance company from Chicago and will premiere in that city on November 11th and continue on to New York City a week later. (Stockholm 18/10 04) In an article in The Guardian (UK) about the Live Aid event where many of the involved have talked to interviewer Carl Wilkinson about their experiences, Phil Collins has this to say about his and Tony Thompson's participation in the Led Zeppelin gig: "Phil Collins: I landed in New York, said my goodbyes to Cher and headed to the stadium in Philadelphia. When I got there I discovered that it wasn't so much me playing with my mates Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, but a Zeppelin reunion. I'd always heard that individually these guys were great, but together there was this black cloud that appeared. I talked to Tony Thompson, the other drummer on the day, about playing with two drummers - some thing I'd done quite a lot - and I really got the impression that he didn't want me to be there. As soon as I got up on stage I could see it was going to be a weird one. Tony Thompson was just playing whatever he wanted. TONY CUT OUT OF LIVE AID DVD!
UPDATE! (Stockholm 17/10 04) George Varga of the San Diego Union Tribune has this to say about the missing Led Zeppelin part of Tony Thompson's performance on the forthcoming Live Aid DVD; "Conversely, Led Zeppelin has decided that its Philadelphia Live Aid reunion is beyond repair. Guitarist Jimmy Page, singer Robert Plant and bassist John Paul Jones recently issued a release describing their performance (which featured both Phil Collins and Chic's Tony Thompson subbing on drums for the deceased John Bohnam) as "substandard."". The DVD producer Jill Sinclair has also stated that a lot of the US performances were not available, because Bob Geldof had told the participating artists, that they shouldn't worry about something going wrong during their performances, because they wouldn't be recorded. BBC (UK) personnel ignored this and recorded it anyway (centering on the UK performances) but their American counterpart ABC did obey Geldof's orders. (Stockholm 16/10 04) The people at Warner Vision who's releasing the Live Aid DVD box (on November 8th) has apparently seen fit to cut out Tony Thompson's participation in that event altogether. So on the DVD we won't see him with the Power Station or Led Zeppelin. Nile Rodgers will still appear with Madonna & the Thompson Twins. (Stockholm 09/10 04) I just got the below statement from Johnny Mathis people: "We regret that, to our knowledge, "I Love My Lady" will not see the light of day. We have forwarded to Sony, by way of our attorney, letters, inquiries, etc. from fans who were hoping to hear this album. This seems to have had no impact. Although we appreciate your enthusiasm, we won't be pursuing the matter any further with Sony. Mr. Mathis has already weighed in on the matter, and they refused to release it. Sorry." This is what Simon posted in the Forum: "Just heard back from Nile on the Fonzi album. He's going to get in touch with Fonzi himself and ask for the tapes which, by the way, he said made for a good album. He'll then try and distribute it via his label as well as, he says, probably being able to secure a deal for it outside of the States. Watch this space guys. (Stockholm 21/07 04) Reported by CHIC fan Luc and also by the AP news agency. The CHIC gig at the close of the Montreux Jazz Festival resulted in some extraordinary news. The organizer of the festival Claude Nobs announced together with Nile Rodgers, "that Nile will come back next year with the We Are Family Foundation, together with many artists he produced like David Bowie, B52's, Debbie Harry and maybe even Madonna." UPDATED! (Stockholm 29/06 04) Reported by Richard Hilton in the Forum: This whole Luther idea is based on somebody misunderstanding something Nile said at the WAFF fundraiser. Nile is thinking about doing a "mash-up" mix of Everybody Dance and some other songs. Luther sang on Everybody Dance (the original record) and so therefore he would be "appearing" on the record, albeit from 28 years ago or so. TONY THOMPSON DEAD AT 48
(Stockholm 14/11 03) Tony Thompson died of cancer in Los Angeles early on Wednesday morning Nov. 12th with his family by his side. The drummer of the original CHIC set and The Power Station. He started out in the early 70s influenced by rock music and fusion. Briefly playing with Labelle and Ecstasy, Passion & Pain before joining CHIC. With CHIC he created hits like 'Le Freak,' 'Good Times,' 'We Are Family,' & 'Upside Down'. His drumming style was an essential part of the CHIC sound, and that style benefited many of the most significant productions of the 80s among them Diana Ross' 'diana,' David Bowie's 'Let's Dance' & Madonna's 'Like A Virgin'. Tony Thompson formed The Power Station together with John & Andy Taylor and singer Robert Palmer in the mid-eighties using his powerful drumming to create a sound renowned throughout rock music circles. He joined Led Zeppelin for 1985's Live Aid concert, this led to him being asked to replace deceased John Bonham for the failed LZ reunion attempt in 1986. His drumming was also significantly featured on Robert Palmer's solo album 'Riptide.' The Power Station was reunited in the mid 90s for the 'Living In Fear' album which turned out to be fellow CHIC-man Bernard Edwards last production. He's been working on various projects and as a screener for a record company the last few years, and Tony was working as recently as this summer with fellow CHIC-man Raymond Jones on the title track for the indie-movie 'Wasabi Tuna.' Tony Thompson is considered one of the best drummers of our time, the creator of the BIG drum sound that has influenced a lot of artists. He was at the center of era defining groups and is featured on many of the most significant recordings of the last 30 years. He will be much missed by us CHIC fans. Thank you Tony for giving us so much joy. Rest in Peace. Our thoughts and love are with Tony's family and friends in this time of grief. The benefit concert for Tony will go ahead as a tribute to a great man. All proceeds will help relieve Tony's family of some of the financial strain brought by his illness. Patrice with her friends will be organising a benefit. Patrice will keep us up to date on how Tony will be doing & anymore details on the benefit in due time. The film is called 'Wasabi Tuna' and is being run out here every Friday night at the Arc Light theatre on Sunset Blvd. On the opening theme, I got Tony Thompson to play some drum fills for me. It was great. Other musicians I hired for the score were, the guitarist from Tony's new band Dave Plotkin, vocalist Portia Griffin (Jeffrey Osborne, Black Crowes and Sweet Inspirations), drummer Vince Wilburn (Miles Davis' nephew), vocalist Dawn Bishop (Sergio Mendes) among others. (Stockholm 12/10 03) Reported in the CHIC Tribute Forum by Simon Parr: I got to meet Nile for a second time this year, this time at Wembley last night. Here are the results of my meeting: 1. Diana Ross recorded one extra track during their sessions being "I've Got Protection" which ended up on the "Real People" album. 2. Nile had no idea why "Riding" by Fonzi Thornton didn't make it onto the "Soup For One" soundtrack. 3. Sylver said that the new album was about 65% completed and that they were going back to New York to continue with it. The new vocalist, Jessica Wagner said she may have one lead vocal track but the rest will be Sylver on lead. Thank you Simon for this news!
ROBERT PALMER DEAD AT 54
(Stockholm 01/10 03) Singer Robert Palmer died of a heart attack on September 26 in Paris, France. He's best known to CHIC fans for his work with Bernard Edwards & Tony Thompson on The Power Station & his successful solo album 'Riptide' from 1985, containing number one hit 'Addicted To Love' and number 2 hit 'I Didn't Mean To Turn You On' both feature slick videos that attracted a lot of attention. UK born Palmer started his career in 1968 singing in UK based band The Alan Bown Set, his solo career began in 1974 and he had several hits in the 70s and early 80s. Palmer continued to release solo albums throughout the 90s and he teamed up again in with Bernard Edwards, Tony Thompson and Andy Taylor for The Power Station's 2nd album 'Living In Fear' in 1996. His latest album, 'Drive' released in May this year was a top ten blues album hit. Palmer was best known for his style, and for his eclectic music taste, working in several genres and also merging them in his solo work. A true musical explorer he will be much missed. Rest in Peace. NILE ON UNRELEASED MATERIAL AND NEW CD
(Stockholm 28/08 03) Reported in the CHIC Tribute Forum by Simon Parr: I was in Tokyo on business last weekend and got to see Chic live and meet Nile backstage. Here are some results from my meeting: 1) Nile has no idea if the Johnny Mathis album will ever be heard. He said he thought it was a great album and that a track off it called "Go with the Flow" was one of their best. No material from that album was ever used on future CHIC projects. 2) All material recorded by CHIC was put onto CHIC albums. 3) There were extra tracks recorded by Diana Ross that didn't make it onto the album and possibly I think some other outside production stuff but Nile didn't think there was enough to ever release an "Unreleased CHIC Organisation" album. 4) The new CHIC album will DEFINATELY be released next year... he wanted it released for next month, the same month as his birthday, but that hasn't happened. He thinks the new album will certainly appeal to CHIC fans and is one of the best albums CHIC have done.. Sylver Logan Sharp said the new album is more dance orientated than CHIC-ism. 5) Nile's favourite album is "Let's Dance" and favourite single "Good Times" partly because it represented the struggles the band were having in relation to the disco backlash. 6) Nile considers himself to be the "deep thinker" when it came to writing with Bernard. When tracks appeared Nile would keep trying to improve them whereas Bernard would swap and change a few bits quickly to create a good result. The CHIC Concert in Tokyo was excellent... the Japanese crowd were going wild (which is unusual in Japanese culture).. all 7 UK hits with the exception of "My Feet Keep Dancing" were performed as well as "CHIC Cheer" to introduce the band and a medley of "Upside Down", "I'm Coming Out", "He's The Greatest Dancer" and toward the end of the Concert "We Are Family"... sound quality and vocals were excellent.. a truly professional show. Announced on the Motown BBS, Universal/Motown are releasing the original CHIC mix of Diana Ross 'diana' album (1980) on a special deluxe 2 CD edition on the 29th of July 2003. The first CD will contain both the original mix and the Russ Terrana mixed Motown release. The second CD will contain previously unreleased and rare dance mixes from the time leading up to the 'diana' album. (Stockholm 29/05 03) Luigi reported (in the forum) yet another Italian groups homage to CHIC, this time it's Stylophonic who on the second single release, 'Soul Reply,' from the album 'Man Music Technology,' samples CHIC's 1978 'Sometimes You Win' the track is indeed very good and they have made great use of the sample. Reported to me by mail, German outfit Wackside have done two remixes of CHIC written tracks. They first released Sisters Sledge 'Lost In Music' (1979) and have lately released 'Le Freak' (1978) personally I prefer the latter. ALCAZAR's CHIC DOUBLE TAKE ON NEW CD
(Stockholm 09/05 03) The Swedish Disco-Nouveau group Alcazar who, last year, had hits with the two CHIC sampled songs 'Crying At The Discotheque' and 'Sexual Guarantee' are doing a new double take on their forthcoming album 'Alcazarized'. The song 'Dancefloor Docusoap' is sampling CHIC's 'I Want Your Love' (1978) and 'I Go Shopping' is using CHIC's 'What About Me' (1979). Besides this, Alcazar has had help from Bjorn & Benny from ABBA and the Pet Shop Boys. The album is set for Swedish release on the 12th of May. Other release dates to be determined later. (Stockholm 04/04 03) I got a mail from GregWomack of the Yahoo-group CHIC Freaks a couple of weeks back about this, but haven't been able to get it confirmed until now. But it seems it's official, Real People (1980) and Tongue In Chic (1982) two long out of print Chic albums will be re-issued on a two-albums-on-one CD later this month. The company that is putting out the CD is Wounded Bird Records. The albums are not digitally remastered, unfortunately, but let's be glad that they're re-issued. (Stockholm 04/03 03) Got this from Raymond Jones today: "DMX was bumped from the Tonight Show today. We (his band and DJ) were on set, ready to go, but X was unable to show up on time for his run through etc. After waiting as long as they could (even moving things around to a degree), the producers of the show made the decision to bump him from the schedule. I did however, get a picture with George Forman so I went home happy. We have all seen this type of thing in our industry before and will see it again. Its unfortunate when it happens but it just reminds one to keep focused on one's own goals. Sorry if I made any of you stay awake to watch the show!!! Peace, Raymond Jones"

(Stockholm 03/02 03) I got the following report, on the CHIC 25th Anniversary gig on Jan. 29th, from Rich Hilton today: "Brief update on the gig last Wednesday. Very successful night of entertainment. Evening started with some short filmed presentations introduced by Montel Willams and Nile. The President of Court TV was introduced as a special honoree. The Diana Ross tribute film was shown (Diana phoned in but was not present), and shortly thereafter, Chic began their show with the I'm Comin' Out/Upside Down medley. We played "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" with Ashford & Simpson, "Roam" w/Kate Pierson of the B52s, and "God Bless the Child" and "Lady Marmalade" with Patti LaBelle, in addition to performing our usual collection of Chic material. Appearing on stage at various points just hanging out, dancing, singing, or whatnot were Fonzi Thornton, Wyclef Jean, Miss Piggy (from the Muppets), the Prez of Court TV ...some of the Village People (who also performed two of their classics) ...and many others ...the stage was as crowded as the audience!" (Stockholm 09/11 02) There's a lot going on with the We Are Family Foundation. The site has gone through a major overhaul. The foundation is now involved with a lot of different projects. One is to try to get the US Congress to designate March 11th (6 month anniversary of Sept 11th) as National We Are Family Day to celebrate our common humanity. Among others Senators Bob Dole and Orrin Hatch are supporting this drive. You can also be involved by filling out a form with your name and state. RICHARD HILTON ON DURAN PROJECT

(Stockholm 23/05 02) When I asked Richard Hilton about the Duran Duran project (I said I hoped DD was going funk) this is what he replied: I have just returned from our second two week stay in London, working with Duran Duran (the original five members). We will be returning to London in about 10 day's time to work on it some more. None of the other Chic personnel are working on this project as yet. The material is a collection of great rock songs. They're not really "going funk", but the grooves we're getting are very strong and I think you'll be very pleased with what they've done. They've been very nice to me and obviously regard Nile very very highly. I feel very honored to have the opportunity to work with them, and it's all that much better because they're very nice people. CHIC IN CANCELLATION CONFUSION
(Stockholm 10/02 02) CHIC was supposed to perform at Irving Plaza on Feb. 2nd but that date was canceled in favor of March 11th and a tie-in with some sort of 'We Are Family' Foundation Extravaganza? Now this date has also been canceled?? The first date seems to have been canceled without proper info going out to all the ticket buyers, which is very disappointing! I have no info on why the second date (in March) was canceled. In cases such as this it would be nice to have some official statement. The Foundation Site also reports on a coming album release sometime in 2002, as well as a remake of the single by favorite children characters coming this March. UPDATE 18/11 01: First I thought it was an outright sample. However, Tomas and Kasper of FILUR, have pointed out to me that they played all the instruments themselves and looped that. But they also said they'd been inspired by CHIC, but the chords used are different and are therefore completely their own creation. I apologize for any missconception that might have been the result of the original post on this matter.

(Stockholm 06/11 01) Alcazar who recently have been climbing the Euro-charts with the 'Spacer'-backboned 'Crying At The Discoteque,' (featured on the soundtrack for the US version of 'Queer As Folk') are doing a Chic revisit for the second single from their album 'Casino.' This time it's 'My Forbidden Lover' who get's the Alexander Bard (producer and founder of glitzy disco group Army Of Lovers) treatment, and out comes 'Sexual Guarantee.' (Stockholm 22/9 01) Nile Rodgers are putting together a bonanza of famous people from all walks of life to re-record the anthemic 'We Are Family' to benefit the 'American Red Cross' and organizations that work with defending minorities from racial attacks and promoting tolerance, in the wake of the WTC attack on Sept. 11th. The song will be published by Tommy Boy and a music video directed by Spike Lee, as well as a 'making of' documentary by Danny Schecter will be released. Nile Rodgers says he's inspired by Nelson Mandela telling him that that song kept Mandela's spirit up during his imprisonment on Robben Island. 'Nothing keeps the spirit up like song' comments Nile. Confirmed participants are, to name a few, Diana Ross, Sheryl Crow, Steven Tyler, Britney Spears, Busta Rhymes, NSYNC, Sister Sledge, Run DMC, Andre Agassi, John McEnroe, Vanessa Williams, Joan Rivers, Macaulay Culkin and Kevin Bacon. The song will be recorded in two sessions on Saturday 22 in NYC and Sunday 23 of September in LA.

LE RAI C'EST CHIC
(Stockholm 30/8 01) Nile Rodgers has produced famous Rai singer Cheb Mami, recently involved with Sting. And indeed Sting and Nile are singing back-up on the single release, interestingly called "Le Rai C'est Chic". The album is called "Dellali" and Nile produced 9 of the 13 tracks on it. The best thing about this album is that almost all of the current Chic band set are involved as musicians and mixers, Richard Hilton for instance is credited with mixing 4 tracks. Apart from the single I like the melancholic 5th track "Rim Lachoua" and track 13 which is a more dance-oriented tune "Haoulou" best.

(Stockholm 18/6 01) Today I recieved confirmation from one of the Chic band members, Richard Hilton, that Nile, at a NYC concert in feb. 2001, indeed did say that he was planning a NEW! CHIC album for the summer of 2001. Rich confirmed they had recorded some stuff but couldn't confirm a set release date. Well one thing's sure it's in the works-and we can all anticipate the happy arrival of yet another excursion to the land of good groove!

ALCAZAR IN CHIC DEVOTION
The new project of Alexander Bard of "Army of Lovers"is the Swedish group ALCAZAR, their second single uses samplings from the CHIC produced, Sheila B. Devotion song "Spacer". The song's called "Crying at the Discoteque" (March 2000) and are suitably cliché to follow the mould set by AoL.

BLACKNUSS'S SLEDGE HOMAGE
Swedish Soul and Funk Community Blacknuss Allstars has released (March 2000) a cover of "Thinking Of You" Sisters Sledges Nile'nNard produced song from the "We are Family" album of 1979. The cover is quite good and only adds an airier sound as well as updated beats. The CD is distributed by SONY (Superstudio Orange D-21).

CHIC IN BRITAIN IN DECEMBER 1999
Chic will be on tour in Britain in december. They will be part of a nostalgia concert tour featuring other acts from the disco era. They will be playing among other, Wembley december 15, and Dockland arena on december 18. Wembley is on the net, but u can only order tickets by phone or fax. I am unfortunately to short of bred to be able to go- (great howls of sorrow!!!). But if you are able to go- GO!!!

NAVIGATORS RELEASE SUPERSTAR.
The Swedish group Navigators released their first single this month (march 99). It relies heavily on a bass and guitarr groove from Edwards and Rodgers "I want your love" from 1978. They have stated in an interview, on ZTV the premier swedish music channel, that one of their main inspirations musically is disco. Judging from their first release CHIC must be one of the foremost sources of inspiration. So who knows, maybe there will be more samplings in the future.
